One of the men that was shot at Trolly Square works at my work. He is still alive and in stable condition at the hospital. It was a scary event. Not only because Trolly is such a familiar place to me but because a co-worker was involved. Too close for comfort. It made me sad thinking about the 18-yr old boy who did the shooting. What has life brought him that made him take those extreme actions? And it made me sad thinking about the innocent people who were shot. They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. What if they had lingered in a store for 10 more minutes, or decided to go to a different mall that night. I feel so safe in my little city of Salt Lake, death and guns are not apart of my reality. I can't imagine living in a country, like Iraq, where people getting shot is an everyday event.

I hadn't heard of this event until I read your blog. Things like this always stop and make us think. The trick is to not forget a week later and go about life the same as before. Think about 9/11 and ask yourself if the thought of it effects you the same way as it did the moment you first heard of it. The answer is invariably NO. Why is that? Nothing about the event has changed, just your distance from it.
Compassion and understanding for others and their circumstances, is a virtue that fluctuate in our lives, it makes you wonder if the two phenomena might be linked.
